At a time when the Church was suffering financial distress, the Lord sent
President Lorenzo Snow to St. George, Utah, where an extended draught prevailed.
While there, says President Ezra Taft Benson, the Lord inspired President Snow “to
reemphasize the principle of tithing, to redeem the Church from financial bondage.”
Meanwhile, the Saints in Utah’s Dixie were promised deliverance from the draught, if
they would obey the Law of Tithing. President Benson added: “In those days the
General Authorities took that message to the members of the Church.” As a result, they
were taught the Law of Tithing with greater clarity and testimony, until they understood it
and began to freely obey it.
